Description

Your twelve-year-old is arguing about whether Gettysburg Grounds is worth what a classmate just paid for it. That is a history class working.

Discovering American History: Junior High Adventure, featuring Histopoly is a live online U.S. history class for middle school built around a game True North Academy designed itself. Modeled on Monopoly, Histopoly sends students out to research and collect properties representing real historical locations, from Gettysburg Grounds to New Deal Drive, across America’s ancient and medieval roots and on through the pivotal moments of the Civil War.

Every five weeks the board changes to reflect a new era, bringing with it the people, essential vocabulary, maps, timelines and primary source documents of that period.

Chance and strategy are built into the gameplay. Students buy, trade and challenge one another, and they do it by demonstrating what they read in the assigned history. Julia Jinks runs a fast-paced hour in which students ask and answer the thought-provoking questions themselves, which is exactly why the content stays with them.

This one is for the visual and kinetic learner who has had enough of history workbooks: the student who remembers what happened because, in a small way, they lived through it.

A former CBS news producer and HGTV writer, Julia Jinks teaches writing, literature, history and personal finance using the IEW method.

“I really appreciate how my teacher was good at explaining assignments. I also appreciate how my teacher answered my emails quickly. Another thing I liked about this class was there was a good amount of homework and games. I had a lot of fun completing the assignments and playing the games. My favorite games were Blooket and Kahoot. I also liked how we did in-class assignments. I liked how I got to talk to some of my other classmates. I liked how I was able to complete some of the assignments with other classmates. I really enjoyed being in the U.S History – Junior High class. I really enjoyed having Mrs. Jinks as my teacher!”

  3. Grace Clark –

Fun and easy to complete assignments. The instructions given were very clear and the videos presented in class were useful. The teacher herself was very gracious and patient when there were technical difficulties. I would definitely recommend this class. The reading was easy to follow along with and the quizzes were fun and interactive.

  4. Kaden –

I really enjoyed how we did review and assignments. Quiziz, Kahoot, and Booklet were really fun. We also did projects which I appreciated too. The homework was very reasonable. The games made it quite enjoyable and not too daunting. The projects were a little more work but still not bad. We had some fun games and projects. Quiziz and Kahoot were probably the best. We also had entertaining projects of which my favorite was making a president into a superhero. The teacher was also very helpful. Overall I learned a lot in an interesting way.

Fantastic Class! US history-Jr High is awesome! In this class we learned from the pilgrims all the way to the assassination of John F Kennedy. The best part of the class is the homework, the teacher and leaning about how are beautiful country came to be. Mrs Jinks isthe best teacher! She makes it so fun and worth while. Also every week there was something new for homework. We would have a presentation on a battle during the civil war, or five facts about a US president, quizzes, games, Nearpods, worksheets, kahoot and Blookets! This class is so amazing and I hope you take it! You will lear so much!

It was pretty fun most of the time and the other times it felt baseline. History for me isn’t one of my strong suits and I don’t find very old history interesting. But I do enjoy the more resent history.

  7. Coy Willis –

This is an excellent class! It’s nice that you can choose what type of history you want to study. In the past, I only had the option of world history (which I struggled with). The homework was minimal. Usually, she had a game for us to play for our homework, which made it less of a task. The teacher was very kind and helpful, she is definitely a good teacher.

Histopoly gave me a more in-depth understanding about where our country (America) came from. My favorite activity was the President project where we picked our favorite president made them a true origin story and turned him into a superhero. My president was Thomas Jefferson and i turned him into a robot superhero. I loved how we played a history monopoly game which was the best part of the class. I hope you will enjoy this class as much as I did. Thank you so much Mrs. Jinks.

  10. Sadie Inglis –

This class is one of my favorite classes. Mrs. Jinks is a good teacher with fun assignments. I enjoy going to class every week to learn about history and play learning games. I would definitely recommend this class if you want to learn history in a fun way with your classmates.

  12. David Hase –

I liked Histopoly because it made history more fun and interactive instead of just memorizing facts. The activities helped me understand things better. My favorite part was the Historical Superhero Project where I made John Adams into the “Atlas of Independence.” It made learning about him more interesting and easier to remember.
