Description

Stoichiometry is where a lot of capable students quietly decide science is not for them. It does not have to go that way.

This live online chemistry class for high school is Dr. Kristin Moon’s traditional, college-prep chemistry: atomic structure, states of matter, the organization and, as she puts it, the beauty of the periodic table, ionic and covalent bonding, chemical nomenclature, the mole concept, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, the behavior of gases, and acids and bases.

Students who want the harder road can take the optional honors track, which adds roughly one to two hours a week and reaches topics such as molecular shape and VSEPR theory that the standard track does not cover.

Dr. Moon teaches without a textbook, on purpose. She built her science courses for a dyslexic son who learns from video and hands-on work, and that became her normal: she teaches the week’s concepts live, assigns videos students earn points for watching, and lets the labs and problem sets do the rest.

Optional reading passages from the free CK-12 Chemistry text are there for students who would rather read. Most lab supplies come from the kitchen or the grocery store.

Dr. Kristin Moon holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Florida and has taught science for more than twenty years.

“We loved this class. My artist child has found high school science and math both challenging and dull – until this class. Dr. Moon gives really interesting information in a fun format. She never complained about the work because it was interesting. This isn’t a class where you are doing busy work and cramming information into your head to get the grade you need. She was freed from that, so she could take the time to learn the material with the work given. Dr. Moon is also accessible to assist when there is a problem or confusion (since a lot of us don’t remember high school chemistry). I honestly feel that being there for the labs and overhearing the videos, I learned more than I did in my entire year of chemistry as a student. What a delightful class!”

Dr. Moon makes high school Chemistry manageable for homeschooling parents. Most of us aren’t prepared to teach advanced Science courses to our children. She has an excellent scope and sequence for the course – she covers all of the necessary topics for an introductory Chemistry course, but the pace is not too fast or overwhelming. She is approachable and willing to help students both during and between classes. She loves to see students gain understanding and have a successful experience. Labs are part of the course but do not require expensive materials or equipment. My daughter has loved taking her high school Science courses with Dr Moon. She is an exceptional teacher and mentor.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you have done for me this year and what an amazing teacher you have been! This class was so fun and engaging and I am so thankful I had this opportunity! I look forward to attending more classes with you”

  3. Caden J., student –

“This has easily been the most understandable and organized class I have taken this year, maybe of all time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you!”

  4. Ava R, student –

“You truly are one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. you make everything so understandable” Ava R, student

  5. -Becky L., parent –

“My daughter has been turned into a complete nerd and you are to blame.
She just came in- “Mom- CHECK OUT MY PERIODIC TABLE!, let me tell you about it!” and she goes on to explain how it is all sorted and what all of the numbers mean.
It’s actually very funny. She is seriously considering going into the sciences because of your classes. ’”

I’m not sure what I can add to these reviews, but I certainly want to add my hearty, “Amen!”
Dr. Kristin Moon has been a profound gift from the Lord. Her Chemistry course offers high quality academic content AND an approachable course structure. If your child wants to learn and succeed, they will be not only be supported but delighted with rich learning experiences. And, if your child struggles with motivation, they will still be met with a gifted teacher who will draw them in, inspire them, and persevere with them. The teen years have been challenging for me as a homeschool mom; I’m SO grateful for Mrs. Moon who clearly demonstrates insight, skill, and joy in working with these teenaged images of God.

Dr. Moon Is an EXCELLENT teacher. She teaches each topic very thoroughly, provides videos with assignments, responds to questions quickly, and is a delight to have as a teacher. The actual content is fun to learn the way she teaches it. The labs are not overly complicated and come with thorough explanations. Would 100% recommend to anyone who is interested.

Dr. Moon’s Chemistry has become my absolute favorite subject of all time! I’ve never had an interest in science but Dr. Moon’s class has completely changed my perspective on science. Chemistry gets a bad reputation for being extremely difficult and stressful, so when starting this course, I was anxious. However, Dr. Moon’s class quickly became the highlight of my week. Dr. Moon is thorough when teaching class and quick to respond to any questions. Her assignments are fun and not too challenging. She is very encouraging and offers a plethora of extra credit assignments. Dr. Moon is one of my favorite teachers! I would take her chemistry class again in a heart beat! Cannot recommend Dr. Moon’s class enough!

  10. Xander Brent –

Dr. Moon was a fantastic teacher! Her classes were very fun and engaging, with some classes having group activities. She made chemistry very interesting and easy to understand. She was extremely kind, always had fun labs and homework for us to do, had lots of extra credit if needed, and was always there to answer any questions if you needed help. Best of all, she helped me understand chemistry! I would 100% recommend her to ANYONE looking for a fun and engaging chemistry class or for anyone who, like me, is a little chemistry-wary!

  11. Lilliana Logan –

I have never loved science so much! This class has been the highlight of my year. Dr. Moon is such a blessing, she is so good with the students and is incredibly helpful and supportive.
Going into this class I was so scared I would fail and not like chemistry. But the results are the total opposite! Chemistry has been my favorite subject and I am actually doing very well in this class. Thanks to Dr. Moon.
If you are looking for a good chemistry class, with a supportive atmosphere and an amazing teacher. This is the class for you.

  12. Catherine C. (Student) –

Before I started this class, I didn’t really like science. Science was always the last thing I would do. I wasn’t sure I would like this class, but I loved it! Dr. Moon explains everything so well and makes the class fly by. One of the things I love about this class is that there are YouTube videos included with every assignment. That way, if you didn’t understand everything in class, you get a quick explanation before you start your homework. Dr. Moon is always making sure that students understand everything and always says to reach out to her if you don’t understand anything. I truly enjoyed chemistry this year.
