Description
“Why do I need to know this?” Sunshyne Hummel built this course around that question, and she answers it every week.
Conceptual Chemistry is a live online chemistry class for high school with less emphasis on heavy math and more on understanding the concepts and applying them. Students work through atomic structure, electrons and electron configurations, periodic trends, chemical bonding, and chemical reactions, and then take each one into the kitchen or into a career connection.
At-home labs, simulations, discussions, readings, videos, and projects carry the week, and everything lands in a science notebook and formal lab reports.
Two semester-long projects anchor the year, including a second-semester Culinary Chemistry project that is exactly what it sounds like. The reading is good company for it: The Disappearing Spoon in the Young Readers Edition and Homework Helpers Chemistry.
An honors track is available for students who want more, adding assignments, a second book from a set list, and the Student Lab Report Handbook.
Sunshyne Hummel brings a geology degree, a master’s in geochemistry and years as an environmental consultant to her junior high and high school science classes.
