Time Travelers: An Adventure in World History is a full-year live online world history class for high school that runs on simulations, debates and project-based work. Students move from the rise of the ancient empires, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the age of exploration and global trade, revolution and reform movements, modern conflict and cooperation, and the interdependence of the world today.
They analyze primary and secondary sources, trace how trade and conflict connected societies, and defend their conclusions out loud in class.
There is no expensive textbook. Beth Purcell supplies e-copies of texts and resources and builds the course from curated primary sources, maps, timelines and her own materials. Students create passports across the year that end up serving as their personal world history reference.
In a given week they might draft a declaration mid-revolution, design an artifact from a lost civilization, or present as a historical figure.
Beth holds a degree in English, is IEW-certified, and teaches history the way a good storyteller does: as something your student is still standing inside of.
Beth Purcell, True North’s Humanities Department Chair, is an IEW-certified writing instructor with an English degree from the University of South Carolina.
