Math for Science: Building Quantitative Confidence

A 6-Week Summer Intensive for Lab-Based Science Success

Length: 6 weeks (2 live sessions per week)
Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. Central
Session: Summer 2026 (Summer Session begins Monday, May 18th)
Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra completed (Algebra I recommended or taken concurrently)

Course Description

This 6-week intensive equips students with the math skills they need to succeed in science lab work and data-analysis. Students will learn to convert units, analyze and graph real data, handle exponents and logarithms, understand statistics and error, and follow the full scientific method—from observation to conclusion. Emphasis is placed on how math underpins scientific investigation: measuring carefully, interpreting results, discerning patterns, and communicating findings with clarity.

Math for Science: Building Quantitative Confidence

A 6-Week Summer Intensive for Lab-Based Science Success

Length: 6 weeks (2 live sessions per week)
Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. Central (Classes begin the week of May 18th, 2026)
Session: Summer 2026
Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra completed (Algebra I recommended or taken concurrently)

Course Overview

Does your student understand the science—but feel unsure when the math shows up in the lab?

Math for Science: Building Quantitative Confidence is a focused, hands-on course designed to help students use math the way scientists actually do. In this 6-week intensive, students learn how math supports real scientific work—measuring accurately, analyzing data, spotting patterns, and clearly explaining results.

Students will practice essential skills like unit conversions, graphing real data, understanding statistics and error, working with exponents and logarithms, and applying the full scientific method from observation to conclusion. The goal isn’t just “doing the math,” but knowing why it matters and how to use it with confidence in lab-based science courses.

By the end of the course, students are prepared to approach chemistry, biology, physics, and other lab sciences with clarity, accuracy, and confidence.

Who This Class Is For

This course is ideal for:

  • High school students (and strong 8th graders) taking or planning to take lab-based science courses

  • Students who have completed Pre-Algebra and want to strengthen real-world math application

  • Learners who understand concepts but struggle with data analysis, graphing, or lab math

  • Families looking for a science-support math course, not a full Algebra class

What Students Will Learn

Students will gain practical, science-ready math skills, including:

  • Unit conversions, dimensional analysis, and significant figures

  • Graphing and interpreting real scientific data

  • Basic statistics, error analysis, and data reliability

  • Exponents and logarithms used in scientific contexts

  • Applying the scientific method step by step

  • Communicating results using Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER)

Course Features

  • Live, interactive online instruction over 6 weeks

  • Weekly quizzes to reinforce key math-for-science skills

  • “Math in Science” challenges that apply learning to real scientific questions

  • Graphing and data visualization using authentic datasets

  • Culminating data project where students:

    • Analyze real data

    • Create clear visuals

    • Walk through the scientific method

    • Communicate conclusions with confidence

How Technology Supports Learning (Student Outcomes)

Clear organization & accuracy
Students use digital graphing and analysis tools that make it easier to organize data, reduce errors, and focus on understanding—not busywork.

Deeper understanding of real data
Interactive challenges provide immediate feedback, helping students catch mistakes, correct thinking, and build confidence with conversions, statistics, and interpretation.

Real scientific thinking
Students manipulate real datasets, test ideas, and explore trends—mirroring how science is done outside the textbook.

Authentic communication skills
The final project brings everything together as students present findings using visuals and evidence, just like real scientists do.
