FAQ’S
Q: You really teach this class without a textbook?
Yes, it’s true: I don’t use textbooks in any of my classes. My older son is dyslexic, and while I love to learn through reading, he does not! He learns very well from videos and hands-on activities, so that’s how I created my high school science classes for him. When I began teaching the homeschooling community, it was common to find lots of students who had withdrawn from brick and mortar schools because of learning disabilities (specifically dyslexia). So my approach of teaching without a textbook became my normal.
However, many students like to learn through reading. In my online classes, while I don’t assign reading passages I do offer optional passages from popular texts for those students who prefer to learn that way.
I teach the main concepts for the week during our live, online classes. Then, I assign videos for the students to watch to supplement our class. These are assigned videos (they get points for watching them), and I only choose videos that add to the students’ understanding.
So the live classes, the videos, and then the assignments, labs, and projects I assign are how the students learn the material. It’s very effective!
Q: What does the optional honors track entail?
This track is great for students who are planning to go to college, ESPECIALLY for those of you who wish to major in a STEM-related field. Alternatively, the honors track is a good fit for students who enjoy a challenge.
Each week, honors students must complete the same assignments that the rest of the class completes. In addition, they have additional assignments. The types of honors assignments look different from week to week, but may include additional labs/activities, videos to watch, answering a question I pose, etc. The assignments are meant to give students extra practice graphing and analyzing data, researching conflicting points of view, and critical thinking.
These same assignments will be available for ANY student to do. If a student is not enrolled in the honors track, he or she may do any of these assignments for extra credit. However, honors students are expected to do all of the honors assignments by the due date. Honors students can expect to put on average an additional 1-2 hours of work a week to complete the assignments.
Please note that an honors course distinction does not have any impact on students’ grade averages or GPA.
Q: How do you handle dissections?
We have one dissection day to wrap up our study of the animal kingdom. During that week’s live online class, I will dissect an earthworm (representing an invertebrate) and a frog (representing a vertebrate). Students will be able to view the dissections as I perform them in real time. Students who wish to join me can dissect their own specimens alongside me from home. However, no student is required to perform dissections if they don’t wish to.
Q: How do you handle evolution?
In order to serve the largest population of students, I do my best to teach concepts from a neutral worldview. In this class, we do spend a week on adaptations and natural selection, but I purposely steer clear from discussing origins.

Biology is the study of life and living things. Students in this year-long high school course will learn about the amazing complexity found in living organisms, even at the cellular level. We will teach the material using a variety of methods, including live, interactive classes, videos, hands-on activities, online simulations, and labs. Students will understand how the topics we study apply to real life. Students will come to realize that science isn’t just something in a textbook; science is everywhere and affects us every second of every day. This foundational science class will set high school students up for future success as they explore and discover the amazing world around us! Biology Topics we will study include:
- The chemistry of life
- The scientific definition of life and the characteristics shared by all living things
- Cell structure and function, the cell cycle (mitosis)
- The nature, organization, and function of DNA in living things.
- Gene expression: transcription, translation, DNA replication, DNA mutations
- Genetics and heredity involve passing down genes from parent to offspring, understanding meiosis, using Punnett Squares, identifying dominant and recessive gene alleles, and studying Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance.
- How biologists classify organisms into biological kingdoms (taxonomy).
- Characteristics of organisms with Prokaryotic cells (bacteria and archaebacteria), Viruses
- Characteristics of members of Kingdom Protista (Protists and Algae)
- Characteristics of members of Kingdom Fungi
- Characteristics of members of Kingdom Plantae (the plants)
- Characteristics of members of Kingdom Animalia (the animals)
- Natural Selection and Adaptations
- Ecology: water, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen cycles, food webs, populations, symbiosis
The instructor will teach using their resources; therefore, a separate textbook is unnecessary. However, for students who learn best by reading, I will provide OPTIONAL readings that align with each topic. These OPTIONAL reading assignments will be from Exploring Creation with Biology, 2nd Ed by Wile and Durnell, Science Shepard Biology, 3rd Ed, and/or the free, online biology textbook from Guest Hollow.
Class Sections represent two distinct classes. Once you purchase the class, you can let us know which class section (day and time) that you prefer. Class participation, weekly homework assignments, and periodic exams will assess student comprehension and progress.

I’ve learned more in this class than any other Biology class I’ve ever taken! Mrs. Moon is the best most enthusiastic teacher! I wish she taught other subjects just so I could learn them through her teachings.

I can’t recommend Dr Moon enough! My homeschool graduate took Chemistry with her through TNHA, then went on to become a STEM major! My twin sons took this Biology course and it exceeded my expectations. I recommend her to anyone looking for a high school science course.

My daughter starts talking about the next class each week as soon as the class ends. Dr. Moon takes the time to plan activities, labs, and find additional resources to engage the students during the class and all week long while waiting for the next class. This class is phenomenal!

Love Dr. Moon! After struggling to teach biology to my two oldest, a friend suggested Dr. Moon’s science classes. What a difference. No dry boring text books! Dr. Moon teaches with interactive classes and engaging videos followed up with interesting assignments free from mindless busy work. She is clearly very knowledgable and has a passion for teaching. My children have taken her chemistry, physics, genetics and anatomy classes as well with the same awesome results. Thank you, Dr. Moon!

Look no further. You have found the answer to your need for high school science courses that you don’t have to teach yourself. When I was contemplating homeschooling, this was my biggest fear. As a theatre major who didn’t remember much science at all and does NOT enjoy doing labs at home, how was I going to teach high school science? Well, Dr. Moon saved the day! Both of my teens have taken her classes. My son took biology & chemistry, and my daughter took biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology and genetics. I’m so very thankful to have found Dr. Moon! Her classes are challenging enough yet she makes it easy to get a good grade if you try since she gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. I thought the honors option for biology was excellent and will look good on my daughter’s transcript. I appreciate that she gives lots of encouraging comments as she checks over the student’s work. I’ve always been impressed with her credentials too! I doubt that there are many public or private high school biology teachers with a PhD in Molecular Genetics! I’m a homeschool mom who is always hesitant to turn over my teaching to someone else. We don’t do a lot of co-ops or anything like that, but I knew I needed help with science, and I’ve always been very comfortable turning these subjects over to Dr. Moon. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Kristin for everything!

ve had an amazing experience in biology this year! Mrs Moon is an amazing teacher – taking complex topics and simplifying them in a way that was easy to understand. Once I had a basic understanding of the topic, I was able to just be amazed by how fascinating biology is!
Some of my favorite topics we covered this year are cells, DNA, taxonomy, and genetics.
I LOVED all of the hands-on labs we did – not only did it help me stay engaged but it’s always cool to read or watch a video about something (like DNA) and actually get to extract and look at it in real life. 🙂
10/10 experience!

“Dr. Moon is an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher. She makes the topics interesting, enjoyable and relatable for the students. It is a class that has really helped satisfy the curiosity of our science/STEM-minded child. She offers an optional Honors track, which was a huge bonus for my son. There were options for many hands-on lab experiences, and they were excellent. She is easy to reach and responds promptly to emails. It is evident that she has a passion for the subjects she teaches. My son is looking forward to taking her Chemistry class next year, while his younger brother is already enrolled in next year’s Biology class. As a homeschool mom, it has been the class I have been the most satisfied with and have absolutely no regrets over. Without a doubt, I highly recommend Dr. Moon and her science classes.” -Teresa K., parent

I’ve had SO much fun this year! Ever since I was little I’ve always loved science (I dissected a dog shark and deer head for my 8th birthday lol) although in the past few years I feel like I forgot how much I enjoyed it. Taking this class and doing the labs has helped me so much in rediscovering my passion for it. (I already referred a friend and shes registered for biology, I’ll be taking A+P next year and (if I can convince my parents) genetics for the second semester)
Some of my favorite topics from this year are cells, DNA, Taxonomy, Natural Selection, genetics, and kingdoms protista and eubacteria
I LOVED all of the hands-on labs we did – not only did it help me stay engaged but it’s always cool to read or watch a video about something (like DNA) and actually get to extract and look at it under the microscope in real life. 🙂
anyways, thank you so, so much for an amazing year learning about science. <3
