ASL 2 is designed for students who already know the basics of American Sign Language and are ready to grow in their skills and confidence.
In this course, students will expand their vocabulary, improve their signing fluency, and engage in more meaningful and practical communication—all without speaking a word. Students will also explore Deaf culture in depth, gaining insight into the values, experiences, and rich history of the Deaf community.
Each week, students will have dedicated time for review, guided practice, and opportunities to engage in conversations with classmates using the signing vocabulary they are learning. This consistent interaction helps students strengthen their expressive and receptive signing skills while building confidence in real communication.
Throughout the course, a native Deaf signer will periodically join our class, giving students the valuable opportunity to apply their skills and receive immediate feedback from a fluent signer. Students will also participate in a one-on-one session with a native Deaf signer during the course. These experiences help students become more comfortable communicating with members of the Deaf community.
By the end of the course, students will be able to participate in more detailed conversations, describe experiences and preferences, ask and answer a wider variety of questions, and communicate with greater confidence in American Sign Language.
ASL 2 gives students the opportunity to move beyond the basics and begin communicating with greater confidence and fluency in American Sign Language.
Why Continue Learning ASL?
ASL 2 allows students to build on the foundation they developed in ASL 1 while communicating with greater confidence. Students will practice more conversations, strengthen their receptive and expressive signing skills, and gain real-life experience through group activities and one-on-one sessions with Deaf mentors. What begins as a language class in high school can grow into meaningful connections, real-world communication skills, and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

The curriculum we use was proudly recognized as one of the “Best Homeschool Products & Curriculums of 2023–24” by How To Homeschool. ASLDeafined features a comprehensive video dictionary created entirely by native Deaf signers, with over 18,000 words. This gives students a rich, authentic learning experience, allowing them to learn directly from the Deaf community and build skills they can use confidently in real-world situations.

I liked the class overall. My favorite activity was the Gemkit games. My least favorite was the fingerspelling lighting rounds. I feel like I have grown in knowing the deaf culture and my ability to sighn. I was most interested in the life of a deaf person and some of the weird encounters they might have with normal things. I will use this knowledge to have good interactions with the deaf and to look good on resumes. Thanks for a great year of class 🙂 -Connor O. – ASL 2 student

I really enjoyed this year’s class even more than last year. My favorite activities were practicing signing with each other and lightning fingers. I enjoyed this form of practice because it helped me practice reading signs as well as signing them myself. As far as ways I’ve grown, I feel more confident and comfortable with signing. I used to have an extremely difficult time reading fingerspelling but I have thankfully seen a lot of improvement. My favorite topics usually include learning Christian and food related signs, Bible verses, learning about Deaf culture and signs for common conversations. We have a lot of kids that use different languages at my churches Vbs and this summer I intend to volunteer to let the leaders call me if we get a Deaf child who needs someone to talk to. – Molly S. – ASL 2 student

My favorite activity was the research project. I didn’t have a least favorite. I feel like I’ve grown in my facial expressions and other body movements. I really liked the history parts. – Ruth V. – ASL 2 student

As I look back over the past year, I am amazed at how much I have learned in ASL 2. I had taken one in-person class before, and had learned a lot of vocabulary but not much else. Over this year, I learned SO much, from handshapes to grammar to culture. I learned to write in ASL gloss, and how to structure sentences in ASL grammar. Additionally, I learned a lot of new signs. One thing I would have appreciated a little more of would be review of previously learned words. We learned about 50 new words a week, and sometimes I found it hard to remember previously learned words. Overall, I would say that I have learned a lot, and would recommend this class to anyone who wants to grow in their ASL skills!
