Class Description

In German 3/4, students transition from learning about German to learning in German. This course builds confidence in grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening through level-appropriate readings, thematic study, and authentic resources.

This year’s focus is on Germany from World War II to the present day, while the following year will cover Germany prior to World War II. Advanced grammar concepts, including the passive voice, will be introduced this year.

By the end of this course, students will:

• Carry on light conversations about everyday topics.
• Express thoughts and knowledge about class topics in more depth.
• Gain comfort with grammar learned in German 1 and 2.
• Begin mastering more advanced German grammar concepts.

This engaging and interactive course uses games, challenges, and dynamic activities to help students advance in their understanding of both spoken and written German. Pair German 3/4 with courses like German Film, History, Literature, Math, or Psychology for a well-rounded academic year.

What to Expect:

• Regular quizzes to reinforce vocabulary.
• Projects and take-home tests for assessment.
• Opportunities to explore German history and culture through literature, art, film, and virtual tours.
• Collaborative activities to deepen understanding of German grammar and conversation.

Sample Projects Include:

• Reflections on the resistance movement.
• Careers in Germany.
• Comparative studies between Germany and the USA.

Required Materials
Readings for this class are provided by the teacher.
Through the Darkest of Times video game will be used in class as an introduction to life under the Nazi regime. While the game is not a required purchase, students may enjoy completing it outside of class.

SAMR Model Application

German 3/4 integrates technology to enhance learning at every level of the SAMR model:

• Substitution: Students use online tools and the virtual campus to receive and complete assignments, developing digital skills for college and beyond.
• Augmentation: Online video and audio resources provide listening practice in spoken German and illustrate concepts taught in class.
• Modification: Digital tools allow students to create multimedia presentations combining images and text. Students also collaborate and compete through online tools.
• Redefinition: Students take virtual tours of German sites, exploring towns, train stations, and roads while learning vocabulary and grammar. High school students in all levels are invited to join a virtual exchange program where they collaborate on projects with German students studying English.
