Description
Psychological Disorders: Faith, Science, and Understanding
This 15-week half-credit self-paced course explores the field of abnormal psychology through both scientific study and Christian faith. Using Fundamentals of Psychological Disorders (3rd ed., Bridley & Daffin, 2022) as our core text, students will examine the causes, symptoms, and treatments of psychological disorders while also reflecting on biblical perspectives of suffering, healing, dignity, and hope.
Students will engage in weekly readings, journal reflections, and hands-on projects to connect psychology with real-life ministry and service. Emphasis is placed on developing compassion, reducing stigma, and integrating professional knowledge with a biblical worldview.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain major categories of psychological disorders using DSM-5-TR criteria.
- Compare secular models of abnormal psychology with Christian perspectives on human nature.
- Evaluate assessment and treatment methods from both scientific and faith-based standpoints.
- Reflect on Scripture and theology as they relate to mental health.
- Design a final research project on one disorder, including ministry applications.
This course does not include formal quizzes or exams; instead, learning is demonstrated through journals, projects, and a final research presentation. It is designed for advanced high school students who want to grow in both academic understanding and faith-based compassion.
Semester Completion Policy
All self-paced courses must be completed within the semester in which the student is enrolled. While students may work through the material at their own pace, access does not extend beyond the active semester. This policy helps students stay on track, maintain academic momentum, and ensures coursework aligns properly with transcript and credit requirements. We encourage families to plan ahead and schedule consistent time each week for successful completion.
