Video Editing 2

Welcome to Video Editing II at True North Academy! This level two course is designed for students who have completed Video Editing 1 and are ready to enhance their skills in video production, motion graphics, and advanced post-production techniques.

Students will engage in complex projects, developing advanced skills in camera techniques, advanced editing workflows, color grading, motion tracking, and visual effects.

Our curriculum emphasizes professional-level techniques and creative storytelling, teaching students how to create compelling visual narratives while mastering industry-standard post-production tools.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Video Editing 1 or equivalent experience with instructor approval.

Key Projects

Students will complete four major assignments:

• Short film (5-7 minutes) with advanced visual effects
• 30-second commercial with motion graphics
• Music video with complex transitions and effects
• Final portfolio piece incorporating all learned techniques

The workload is distributed evenly throughout the semester, focusing on advanced editing concepts and creative techniques, culminating in professional-quality productions that showcase multiple post-production skills.

Learning Outcomes

Each unit includes technical workshops, creative exercises, and hands-on projects. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Develop unique creative voice and style
• Proficient knowledge of screenwriting for film and television
• Master advanced editing techniques and workflows
• Perform professional color grading
• Execute advanced compositing and color theory
• Create sophisticated multimedia projects from concept to completion

OS: Windows 10 or later / MacOS Catalina or later

Processor: Intel i7/AMD Ryzen 7 or better

Memory: 16 GB RAM minimum

Storage: 50 GB available space

Graphics: Dedicated GPU with 4GB VRAM minimum

Camera Equipment

Access to a camera (DSLR or Mirrorless preferred with the capability to shoot video, but smart device acceptable)

• You can spend between $60 and $300. Whatever you’d like. Just be sure that it can shoot video

Tripod

• Any tripod that fits your camera.

SAMR Model Application

This advanced video editing course implements technology across all SAMR levels:

Substitution: Digital non-linear editing systems replace traditional linear editing methods, while digital asset management replaces physical media storage systems. Virtual production tools substitute for traditional physical production equipment.

Augmentation: Advanced editing software enhances the creative process through features like automated tracking, keyframing, and compositing tools. Cloud-based workflow solutions enable seamless project management and version control. Real-time preview capabilities allow immediate visualization of effects and adjustments.

Modification: Collaborative editing tools enable remote team projects and instant feedback. Virtual classroom sessions feature interactive demonstrations with real-time project sharing. Advanced plugins and effects engines modify the traditional editing process with AI-assisted tools.

Redefinition: Virtual production techniques enable new forms of visual storytelling previously impossible with traditional methods. Cloud-based rendering farms allow students to create cinema-quality effects. Real-time collaboration tools enable global production teams to work simultaneously on projects.
