Latin 3

🎯 Who Is This Course For?

  • High school students who have completed Latin I and II

  • Teens preparing for college-level language, classical studies, or theology

  • Students passionate about history, literature, and languages

  • Learners who enjoy creative integration—especially projects like the Latin comic

  • Homeschool families pursuing a classical education path

  • Students aiming to improve English grammar, vocabulary, and critical thinking through Latin

The goal of Latin III is to prepare students to translate Latin texts. The course begins with a review of skills acquired in previous years, focusing on indicative mood verbs (active and passive voice), adjectives, and pronouns. Students will then learn to define and distinguish between indicative and subjunctive moods, as well as conjugate and translate the present and perfect systems of each.

Besides grammar, students will practice translation and conversational Latin while exploring Roman history and the role of Latin in the Christian Church. To integrate Latin grammar with its broader cultural and linguistic context, students will complete several culture and language projects, culminating in the creation of a Latin comic, which they will plan, write, and design.

This course builds upon Latin I and Latin II, helping students gain a deeper and more thorough understanding of both English and Latin grammar. Students will learn approximately 300 additional Latin vocabulary words, English derivatives, and Latin sayings while developing an appreciation for Roman culture and its influence on Western civilization. Additionally, students will refine their study skills and habits, equipping them with a learning "game plan" applicable to any subject, not just Latin.

Prerequisites: Latin I and Latin II, or equivalent, with prior instructor approval through testing.

SAMR Model Application in Latin III

  1. Substitution: The teacher uses a virtual whiteboard to write out conjugations and translations, and students occasionally conjugate or play games on it.
  2. Augmentation: Students utilize online spinners to randomly generate words and paradigms for practice.
  3. Modification: Parsing, translation, and paradigms are reinforced in class through challenges and review games.
  4. Redefinition: Technology facilitates multimedia activities, such as videos, articles, and virtual tours of the Roman Empire. Students will demonstrate their proficiency in Latin by brainstorming, writing, and illustrating a comic that showcases their understanding of Latin grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context.
