Class Description

Computers are here to stay. They are everywhere. You can’t run an appliance or drive a car without one anymore. Their power continues to improve at an unbelievable rate. But how do they actually work? Why do they work? What can we do with them?

Computer Science has become a very broad topic. It includes computer logic, programming, and design. In this course students will explore computers from many angles. They will first look at the history of the computer. They have come such a long way and understanding the path they took helps to understand where we are and where we are going with computers.

Next the logic of a computer must be explored. Once students really understand the way computers “think” they will be well on their way to knowing how to use them best.

The class will move on to talk about Microsoft Windows and the applications you can use on the machines powered by this software giant. Fans of Apple products like iMacs and MacBooks, Google Chromebooks, or Linex machines are welcome as well and the different systems will be compared if interest exists.

Finally, this course will go over fundamental uses of word processors, spreadsheet programs, and presentation software.

Students will learn about:

  • Basic Parts of a Computer
  • Differences Between Components, Peripherals, and Accessories
  • Common Tasks
  • File Management
  • File Types
  • Command Line Instructions
  • Brief Introduction to Computer Programming
  • The internet and the World Wide Web
  • Microsoft Word / Google Docs / Apple Pages
  • Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets / Apple Numbers
  • Microsoft PowerPoint / Google Slides / Apple Keynote

This course is a one-credit full year course for junior and senior high school students.

SAMR Model Application

This introductory computer science course implements technology across all SAMR levels:

Substitution: Students use digital tools to perform traditional tasks, such as completing assignments in Microsoft Word instead of handwritten work and storing files in cloud storage rather than physical folders.

Augmentation: Technology enhances learning tasks through built-in tools like spell-check, formatting assistance, and interactive typing tutors that provide immediate feedback.

Modification: The course redesigns traditional learning through real-time collaboration and virtual troubleshooting simulations.

Redefinition: Students engage in transformative learning experiences through hands-on projects like creating professional documents in Microsoft Office, practicing essential computer maintenance and troubleshooting, and developing fundamental computer literacy skills.
