German 2
German 2 is a continuation of German 1. If you are joining the class as a new student, students should have a command of basic sentence structure and be able to answer simple questions about themselves and their interests. The second-year covers many of the same topics as the first year, focusing on past tense, broadening vocabulary, and increasing confidence as students move from the novice level toward intermediate-level German on the ACTFL Proficiency Chart.
In German 2 they will continue exploring German culture and geography through mini-projects designed to give real-life connections to language learning. We will also begin reading simplified versions of Grimm’s fairy tales to serve as an introduction to German literature. Assignments will be focused on giving students additional practice on topics discussed in class as well as audio and video assignments for an opportunity to listen to native speakers.
German is the international language of finance and the most widely spoken language in the European Union. German is also the second most commonly used scientific language. Germany is the third largest contributor to research and development and offers research fellowships to scientists from abroad. Students considering a job in health care or the Science field would do well to consider German as a foreign language for high school. Germany also offers an impressive array of scholarships and exchange programs to live and work in Germany for those who understand and speak the language.
