Who Belongs at True North? The Families & Students We Serve

🎧 New Episode of Headed True North

Listen & Follow on Spotify

“What kind of families and students do you have at True North Academy?” It’s one of the questions we hear most — so in this episode of Headed True North, founder Lisa Nehring answers it head-on. Her hope is simple: that somewhere in this conversation, you’ll hear a family and a student who sound a lot like yours.

Since 2019, True North Academy has offered live online and self-paced classes for 6th through 12th graders — not a curriculum you assemble alone, but a real, Cognia-accredited school with real teachers who know your student by name. We spend our days researching where education and the marketplace are headed, so that when your family walks through our doors, the pathway toward future success is already mapped. The goal isn’t just credits and transcripts. It’s students who leave every class with more in their toolbox — academic skills, yes, but also time management, self-advocacy, presentation skills, and digital portfolios that show the world what they can do.

Four families who find a home at True North

True North appeals to a wide range of families, but four in particular tend to find their people here.

The entrepreneurial family often owns businesses or works for themselves. They understand credits and transcripts — but they want education to build initiative, not just grades. Practical and pragmatic, they have no patience for busy work; they want skill-building that motivates their kids and moves them to the next level. They understand that AI is changing everything, and they want their children to think independently, with the personal agency and work ethic to go as far as their creativity will take them.

The mission-driven family is your military, ministry, or first-responder family — families whose lives are dedicated to serving others, and who often relocate. Because so much of the True North community comes from this world, we offer flexible payment plans and help families use ESA and state tax-credit funds wherever they live. These families need stability with flexibility. Every live class is recorded, so a PCS or TDY never means a missed lesson — and our self-paced classes offer room to breathe, with just enough accountability to keep students finishing strong.

The future-focused professional family is college-educated, world-traveling, and clear-eyed about how fast higher education is changing. They’re watching colleges close, consolidate, and lose accreditation — so they want a personalized pathway, not a one-size-fits-all education. They’re open to college, but they want a real return on their money and their time. They’re equally open to entrepreneurship, the trades, and innovative career paths — often a combination of all of them.

The high-achieving homeschool family loves learning and reads widely. Honestly, most True North families fit here in some way. They’re willing to invest in a quality education because they know it can do more than land a great job — it can help build a beautiful life, full of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. They want academic rigor with flexibility, and a community of like-minded families to walk alongside.

Five students, five very different pathways

If the families paint the picture in broad strokes, the students bring it into focus. Here are a few real ones from the episode.

The early-graduate entrepreneur. She came to us in middle school — capable, but demotivated and done with traditional classes. Once she saw the end in sight, everything changed. She finished high school in two years, graduating just before she turned 16 with 26 credits and a 94.5 GPA — all while building a successful fiber arts business she now runs full-time.

The high-achieving college pathway. An honor student who’s halfway to his private pilot’s license at 15. We’re building a customized pathway around his goals so he graduates at 18 with a high school diploma, a college degree, and his wings.

The hands-on builder. A bright student with learning challenges who never felt he could win in a traditional classroom. He launched lawn-care and 3D-printing businesses in high school, graduated with a solid college-prep diploma plus OSHA 10 and first-aid certifications — and, most importantly, left with confidence and a clear direction, thanks to non-traditional classes like Physical Science with Movies and Cinematic Stories.

The family-business builders. Brothers working alongside their parents across a farm, a construction business, and an Airbnb business. They’re earning a rigorous college-prep education and a transcript addendum full of real work experience, headed to trade school for welding and electrical — then back home to strengthen the family business with advanced technical and academic skills.

Why It Holds Together

Accredited, Portable, Personalized

Every one of these stories rests on the same foundation. True North Academy is fully Cognia-accredited, which means your student’s work is recognized and travels with them — a real advantage for families who relocate, and for anyone who may re-enter a public or private school. Cognia’s focus on continuous improvement fits the True North mission beautifully.

Our teachers are subject-matter experts, our class sizes are small by design, and our academic advising builds a personalized plan around who your student is and where the world is heading. This is how the wealthy have always educated their children — looking at the child, not the mold. We don’t just want your student prepared for the future. We want them rooted in Christ and headed True North.

Not sure where your student fits? Start here.

Not every middle or high schooler has it all figured out — and that’s exactly what academic advising is for. We sit down with your family, look at your student’s interests and strengths, weigh what the working world is asking for, and marry the two into a real plan. It’s the best place to begin if you find yourself asking, “What do I even do now?” And while you’re at it, download our Typical Course of Study — one of our most popular free resources — for a clear, year-by-year look at what your student needs.

🎧 Never Miss an Episode

This is the kind of conversation we have every week on Headed True North. Lisa even hints at a dedicated episode on the new student-loan cap and what it means for families planning for college — you won’t want to miss it. Follow the show on Spotify so the next episode lands right in your library.

The Most Important Science Skill Your Child Can Learn (It’s Not Memorization)

by Sunshyne Hummel

The Most Important Science Skill Your Child Can Learn (It’s Not Memorization)

Introduction

How many science facts do you remember from school?

Most adults don’t remember the details of the periodic table, the stages of mitosis, or the formulas they learned in physics class. Yet those same adults successfully solve problems, make decisions, and learn new things every day.

That’s because science is not primarily about memorizing facts. At its core, science is about learning how to think.

Why Memorization Isn’t Enough

Facts are important. They provide the foundation for learning. However, facts alone do not create understanding.

Today, information is more accessible than ever. With a few taps on a phone, we can find answers to almost any question. Because of this, it is more important than ever for students to learn how to evaluate information rather than simply recall it.

For example, a child can memorize that plants need sunlight, but a scientific thinker asks deeper questions:

  • Why do plants need sunlight?
  • How much sunlight is necessary?
  • What happens if sunlight is removed?

Science moves beyond memorization and into investigation. Real scientists are constantly asking questions, examining evidence, and seeking explanations.

The Skill That Matters: Critical Thinking

Science teaches students how to investigate claims and evaluate evidence. Good science asks questions such as:

  • How do we know if this is true?
  • What evidence supports this idea?
  • Are there other possible explanations?

When students learn how to think critically in science, those skills extend far beyond the classroom. Critical thinkers are better equipped to evaluate advertising claims, interpret news headlines, navigate social media, and assess the endless stream of health and wellness information. They learn to look for evidence before accepting a claim as true.

In a world overflowing with information, critical thinking may be one of the most valuable skills a child can develop.

How Parents Can Encourage Scientific Thinking at Home

Parents can foster scientific thinking in everyday conversations.

When your child is curious about something, resist the urge to immediately provide the answer. Instead, ask them questions that help them discover the answer for themselves.

Try questions such as:

  • What makes you think that?
  • How could we test that idea?
  • What evidence do you see?
  • What do you think would happen if…?

Encourage children to explain their reasoning and support their ideas with observations. These simple conversations help develop the habits of curiosity, creativity, and evidence-based thinking.

You don’t need a laboratory or an expensive curriculum to nurture scientific thinking. Often, the best science lessons begin with a question.

Conclusion

The goal of science education is not to create walking encyclopedias.

The goal is to help children become thoughtful, curious, evidence-based thinkers who know how to ask good questions and evaluate information for themselves.

Long after specific facts have been forgotten, those skills will continue to serve them in school, in their careers, and throughout life.

About Sunshyne

Sunshyne teaches science the way it is meant to be learned — through wonder. A practicing Christian herbalist who loves gardening, hiking, and any activity that connects her with nature, she brings that same curiosity into every class.

She currently homeschools her three children using inquiry-based learning and Charlotte Mason principles, and she is passionate about nature study and journaling — a lifelong skill she believes anyone can adopt, and one she shares by leading a Nature Journaling Club in Berks County, Pennsylvania. One of her favorite lines, from Rachel Carson: a child’s sense of wonder needs “the companionship of at least one adult who can share it.”

Experience & Credentials

Sunshyne graduated from Kutztown University with a B.S. in Geology and from Syracuse University with an M.S. in Earth Science–Geochemistry, where her research focused on the chemical properties of groundwater in oil and gas fields across New York, Pennsylvania, and China.

After earning her degree, she worked as an environmental consultant, ensuring environmental compliance for landfills throughout the East Coast — real-world experience that grounds her science classes in the actual world.

What Students & Families Say

“

I loved taking this class! Mrs. Hummel is a wonderful teacher, and she comes up with the best assignments. She makes learning chemistry easy — even when the material isn’t — and genuinely interesting. It’s been one of my favorite classes this year, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

“

I usually hate all school, but I actually enjoyed learning for once. This class helped me see that the planets and stars are far more than a few objects in the sky — they’re really interesting. This was definitely my favorite class.

Which Top Homeschooling Online Programs Are You Genuinely Happy With?

Which Top Homeschooling Online Programs Are You Genuinely Happy With?

True North Academy  ·  For Homeschooling Families

A Florida family with young kids, four and five, went looking for something honest. They were planning a hybrid setup — handling part of it themselves locally, but wanting a strong online component to anchor the curriculum and add variety. Not a rigid virtual public school clone. And they’d hit the frustration so many of us know: they had read through what felt like every “top online programs” list, and the reviews all sounded perfect until they dug deeper and found a mixed bag. So they asked the question that actually matters: if you’ve used an online program for a year or longer, what made it sustainable — curriculum depth, pacing, teacher quality, the parent dashboard, something else?

That’s the right question, because “best” on a list and “genuinely happy a year later” are two very different things. Let’s talk about what actually makes a program last — and why the answer is almost never a flashy platform.

Why the glowing lists fall apart when you dig in

The thread was refreshingly honest. For four- and five-year-olds, the seasoned voices were nearly unanimous: no online platform can anchor a real education at that age, and the happiest hybrid families keep the online piece small — a simple offline spine for early reading and math, plus a few fun classes for enrichment. And the parents who stayed happy for the long haul all pointed to the same quiet factors: real teachers, sane pacing, genuine depth, and consistency — not novelty. As one put it, the families happiest long-term aren’t using something flashy; they’re using something predictable for core skills and adding richness through real life.

You can read the whole conversation — including the case for keeping little ones off screens and the honest “here’s what we actually tried” lists — in this thread on r/Homeschooling. Here’s the tell that separates a program you’ll still love in a year from one you’ll quietly abandon: a real teacher who knows your child, a workload that respects your family’s rhythm, and families who come back season after season. That last one — do people re-enroll? — is the most honest review there is.

Our Recommendation

True North Academy

An honest note first: at four and five, your kids are exactly where that thread’s “keep it offline and play-rich” wisdom belongs. True North Academy is built for the years ahead — middle and high school — and it’s designed to be the part of a hybrid homeschool you stay genuinely happy with.

Why it lasts: True North Academy is fully Cognia-accredited, with real, qualified teachers leading live, dynamic classes in small groups — the teacher quality and depth that keep families coming back year after year. It’s a perfect hybrid anchor, too: you enroll in the classes you want for variety and rigor, keep the rest of your homeschool your own, and lean on academic advising and transcript support to hold it all together. Sessions are recorded, so the pacing bends to your family instead of the other way around.

There’s a compass under all of it. True North Academy is rooted in the Christian conviction that education exists to hand the next generation a culture of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. We don’t only want your child prepared for the future — we want them rooted in Christ and headed True North. That is education with a difference: families first, world-class teachers, and a clear sense of where all this learning is pointed.

Don’t take our word for it

You asked which programs families are genuinely happy with. Here is the answer — across very different classes — in their own words.

“I loved this class so much! It was one of my favorites all through high school.”

Abigail P. (Student)  ·  Personal Finance  ·  Taught by Mrs. Jinks

“Kristin does an amazing job relating to the students. She encourages them, speaks to them at their level and always is happy and friendly during her classes!”

Jennifer Noble (Parent)  ·  Anatomy & Physiology  ·  Taught by Dr. Moon

“This photography class was a really cool experience and I learned a ton from it. I had so much fun being creative. This class helped me find my style of photography and what I like to photograph!”

A TNA Student  ·  Photography & Digital Technology

“The best thing about this class was how the teacher made math easy to understand and less intimidating.”

Clara H. (Student)  ·  Middle School Math

Most Reliable / Best Online Homeschooling Programs?

Most Reliable / Best Online Homeschooling Programs?

True North Academy  ·  For Homeschooling Families

A parent seriously considering homeschooling his six-year-old asked a question with a lot of wisdom already baked into it. He wasn’t looking for something that “just parks a kid in front of a screen all day” — far from it. What he wanted was the reliable option: a program with strong online guidance and real teacher or curriculum support, while still leaving plenty of room for offline learning — reading, projects, and hands-on activities. He’d seen the usual names float by, but from the outside it was hard to tell what actually worked. His real question: what gives you the best balance between structure and flexibility, and between online and offline — and what do you wish you’d known before starting?

It’s the right instinct, and the thread rewarded it with some genuinely good answers. Let’s pull out what “reliable” really means, how to protect that online-offline balance, and where an accredited, teacher-led program fits without swallowing the whole day.

The best answers weren’t about a single program

The most-upvoted advice in that thread barely mentioned software at all. It urged this dad to build his days around real books, conversation, and real-world experiences, with two steady core programs — one for math, one for writing — anchoring the week. Others echoed the same theme for a young child: short lessons, lots of play and hands-on work, and a mix of two or three tools rather than one all-in-one that tries to do everything. The consensus wisdom is worth repeating: for a six-year-old, online should support a rich offline life, not replace it.

You can read the full discussion — including that wonderful long reply about learning through living books and conversation — in this thread on r/Homeschooling. Two things stand out. First, “reliable” means accredited, consistent, and taught by people who know what they’re doing. Second — and this matters more as kids get older — the balance he’s protecting now is exactly what a good live-class program preserves later: a focused block of real teaching, then the rest of the day for reading, projects, and life.

Our Recommendation

True North Academy

A quick, honest note: at six, your son is right where that thread’s book-rich, play-filled advice belongs. True North Academy is built for the years that come next — middle and high school — when the subjects get harder and “teach it yourself” gets tougher. When you reach that stage, this is the reliable option you’re describing.

“Reliable” is the whole point. True North Academy is fully Cognia-accredited, with real, qualified teachers leading live, dynamic classes in small groups — not a screen your child sits in front of alone all day. And it protects exactly the balance he cares about: class meets for a focused block, sessions are recorded for flexibility, and the rest of the day stays open for reading, projects, and hands-on life. You choose the classes and the pathway, with academic advising and transcript support standing behind every credit.

He asked what’s actually been worth it. Here is the answer, in the words of the families who’ve been through it.

“If you’re looking for a comprehensive, engaging, and inspiring entrepreneurship course for your homeschooler, this is the one!”

A TNA Parent  ·  Entrepreneurship  ·  Taught by Mrs. Jinks

“This isn’t a class where you are doing busy work and cramming information into your head to get the grade you need.”

Leslie F. (Parent)  ·  Chemistry  ·  Taught by Dr. Moon

“It really made me think critically about what I was going to do after high school… This class really helped me understand myself, and my strengths and weaknesses, and how that would all affect me later on in life.”

Hannah N. (Student)  ·  Career Exploration

“The process of writing the rough drafts was extremely useful and taught me how to prepare for a paper! I learned how to write at a level I had never written before.”

Addison (Student)  ·  Writing with Confidence  ·  Taught by Mrs. Ferrell

When your child is ready for middle or high school, choose the reliable option — accredited, teacher-led, and balanced. Come see how it works.
