“What kind of families and students do you have at True North Academy?” It’s one of the questions we hear most — so in this episode of Headed True North, founder Lisa Nehring answers it head-on. Her hope is simple: that somewhere in this conversation, you’ll hear a family and a student who sound a lot like yours.

Since 2019, True North Academy has offered live online and self-paced classes for 6th through 12th graders — not a curriculum you assemble alone, but a real, Cognia-accredited school with real teachers who know your student by name. We spend our days researching where education and the marketplace are headed, so that when your family walks through our doors, the pathway toward future success is already mapped. The goal isn’t just credits and transcripts. It’s students who leave every class with more in their toolbox — academic skills, yes, but also time management, self-advocacy, presentation skills, and digital portfolios that show the world what they can do.

Four families who find a home at True North

True North appeals to a wide range of families, but four in particular tend to find their people here.

The entrepreneurial family often owns businesses or works for themselves. They understand credits and transcripts — but they want education to build initiative, not just grades. Practical and pragmatic, they have no patience for busy work; they want skill-building that motivates their kids and moves them to the next level. They understand that AI is changing everything, and they want their children to think independently, with the personal agency and work ethic to go as far as their creativity will take them.

The mission-driven family is your military, ministry, or first-responder family — families whose lives are dedicated to serving others, and who often relocate. Because so much of the True North community comes from this world, we offer flexible payment plans and help families use ESA and state tax-credit funds wherever they live. These families need stability with flexibility. Every live class is recorded, so a PCS or TDY never means a missed lesson — and our self-paced classes offer room to breathe, with just enough accountability to keep students finishing strong.

The future-focused professional family is college-educated, world-traveling, and clear-eyed about how fast higher education is changing. They’re watching colleges close, consolidate, and lose accreditation — so they want a personalized pathway, not a one-size-fits-all education. They’re open to college, but they want a real return on their money and their time. They’re equally open to entrepreneurship, the trades, and innovative career paths — often a combination of all of them.

The high-achieving homeschool family loves learning and reads widely. Honestly, most True North families fit here in some way. They’re willing to invest in a quality education because they know it can do more than land a great job — it can help build a beautiful life, full of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. They want academic rigor with flexibility, and a community of like-minded families to walk alongside.

Five students, five very different pathways

If the families paint the picture in broad strokes, the students bring it into focus. Here are a few real ones from the episode.

The early-graduate entrepreneur. She came to us in middle school — capable, but demotivated and done with traditional classes. Once she saw the end in sight, everything changed. She finished high school in two years, graduating just before she turned 16 with 26 credits and a 94.5 GPA — all while building a successful fiber arts business she now runs full-time.

The high-achieving college pathway. An honor student who’s halfway to his private pilot’s license at 15. We’re building a customized pathway around his goals so he graduates at 18 with a high school diploma, a college degree, and his wings.

The hands-on builder. A bright student with learning challenges who never felt he could win in a traditional classroom. He launched lawn-care and 3D-printing businesses in high school, graduated with a solid college-prep diploma plus OSHA 10 and first-aid certifications — and, most importantly, left with confidence and a clear direction, thanks to non-traditional classes like Physical Science with Movies and Cinematic Stories.

The family-business builders. Brothers working alongside their parents across a farm, a construction business, and an Airbnb business. They’re earning a rigorous college-prep education and a transcript addendum full of real work experience, headed to trade school for welding and electrical — then back home to strengthen the family business with advanced technical and academic skills.

Why It Holds Together

Accredited, Portable, Personalized

Every one of these stories rests on the same foundation. True North Academy is fully Cognia-accredited, which means your student’s work is recognized and travels with them — a real advantage for families who relocate, and for anyone who may re-enter a public or private school. Cognia’s focus on continuous improvement fits the True North mission beautifully.

Our teachers are subject-matter experts, our class sizes are small by design, and our academic advising builds a personalized plan around who your student is and where the world is heading. This is how the wealthy have always educated their children — looking at the child, not the mold. We don’t just want your student prepared for the future. We want them rooted in Christ and headed True North.

Not sure where your student fits? Start here.

Not every middle or high schooler has it all figured out — and that’s exactly what academic advising is for. We sit down with your family, look at your student’s interests and strengths, weigh what the working world is asking for, and marry the two into a real plan. It’s the best place to begin if you find yourself asking, “What do I even do now?” And while you’re at it, download our Typical Course of Study — one of our most popular free resources — for a clear, year-by-year look at what your student needs.

Introducing Headed True North: A New Podcast for Homeschooling Families

There’s a certain kind of conversation that happens after the lesson is over.

The textbook is closed, the dishes are drying, and a question lingers in the air — something your student asked that doesn’t have a tidy, one-sentence answer. What does it mean to be wise in a world like this? How do we make sense of what’s happening in the news? Where is God in all of it?

Those are the conversations we love most at True North Academy. And they’re the reason we’re so glad to share something new with you.

Welcome to Headed True North — the podcast for families who want more than a curriculum.

Listen to Lisa Nehring in our introductory trailer episode: What’s in a name? The story of True North Academy.

Why a podcast, and why now

Homeschooling families are busy. You’re educating, parenting, working, and stewarding a household — often all before lunch. We wanted to create something that meets you in the in-between moments: the morning commute, the folding of laundry, the quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up.

Headed True North is exactly that. Each episode is an honest, hopeful conversation about raising and educating the next generation — rooted in Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, and pointed always toward Christ. It’s the same heart that fills our live, dynamic classrooms, brought straight to your ears.

You won’t find lectures or sales pitches here. You’ll find real teachers — the same world-class educators who know your student by name — thinking out loud about the things that matter. Because the compass that guides our classrooms is the same one we want to share with you: a fixed point of true North in a culture that keeps spinning.

Start with our first episode: The Hidden Cost of AI

For our debut, we’re tackling a topic that’s impossible to ignore — one that’s all over the news and quietly woven into nearly every app on your phone: artificial intelligence and AI data centers.

You might be wondering what True North Academy has to say about data centers. As it turns out, quite a lot — because this is exactly the kind of subject where science, stewardship, and wisdom meet.

In Part 1, two of our science teachers, Melissa Grande (Environmental Science) and Sunshyne “Sunny” Hummel (Chemistry), pull back the curtain on the technology reshaping our power grids, our water supply, and even the wildlife in our own backyards. Together they walk through:

  • What actually happens when you type a prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, or Google
  • Why these systems demand so much energy and water
  • The real-world strain on local communities — and the push to make data centers accountable
  • And, true to True North, the surprising places where this same technology brings hope, from predicting natural disasters to protecting lives

It’s a conversation that takes a headline and turns it into something a family can actually understand and talk about together — at the dinner table, in the car, or in the middle of a science lesson.

And it’s just the beginning. Melissa and Sunny will return later this summer with Part 2, digging into the ethical and environmental questions even more deeply.

This is education with a difference

We believe education is never neutral. It always transmits a culture — and we want ours to transmit a culture of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. That conviction shapes everything we do, from our live classrooms to this podcast.

If these are the kinds of conversations you want your children growing up inside of, we’d love to walk alongside your family. True North Academy is a fully Cognia-accredited online academy offering live, dynamic classes taught by real teachers in small class sizes — built around the families we serve.

And if you’d like to go deeper into the very topics Melissa and Sunny explore, both are teaching live this fall. Search either name — Sunshine Hummel for Chemistry or Melissa Grandy for Environmental Science — at truenorthhomeschool.academy.
