Background Check and Safe Learning Environment Policy

True North Academy is a Cognia-accredited online academy serving homeschooling families with middle and high school students. This policy describes how we screen the adults who work with students and how we keep our online classrooms safe.

Effective November 2026

1. Background Checks

True North Academy requires a criminal background check for every teacher, staff member, and administrator who has contact with students.

  • Staff complete the check through an approved screening provider, such as Protect My Ministry, MinistrySafe, Checkr, or Sterling Volunteers.
  • A church ministry background check completed within the past year may be accepted if the report is provided and meets the same standard.

2. Safe Learning Environment

All classes are taught live online, so there is no in-person contact between staff and students. In addition to required background checks:

  • Each Zoom class requires pre-registration, a verified student email, and a passcode to join.
  • Student and parent accounts in our Blackbaud learning system require two-factor authentication.
  • All teacher, student, and parent communication takes place inside Blackbaud, where parents and administrators have visibility.

3. Education Freedom Account (EFA) Funds

No dependents of True North Academy staff are New Hampshire EFA recipients, and no True North Academy teacher is paid with EFA funds to teach their own children.
