The research paper is where strong students freeze. Better that it happens in a small class with a teacher beside them than in a freshman college seminar with nobody watching.
Research Writing with Confidence is a semester-long, half-credit live online research writing class for high school, and it counts toward required high school language arts. It is built for students who already have thesis formation, essay organization, and the five-paragraph essay in hand.
Over the spring they undertake one in-depth research paper, step by step: locating reliable sources, avoiding plagiarism, writing in APA format, and using AI technology properly rather than quietly.
Angela Ferrell guides the work week by week, and the lion’s share of the grade comes from weekly assignments that progress from outline to finished essay. Because the work is cumulative the load runs light to heavy depending on the week, and students do need to stay caught up.
This is an advanced writing class; a student who struggles with self-direction will need an accountability system at home. The semester ends with an exposition where each student presents their work using advanced presentation techniques.
Careful research is a way of honoring the truth. Students here learn to do it with integrity, and to say plainly where their ideas came from.

In this class, I learned how to format an essay in APA, which will be a useful skill for college. I also learned about Google Scholar, a search engine for reputable sources, which you can use in your essay. I also realized the importance of time management, so that if you go bit by bit, it’s easier than trying to do it last minute!
