How do humans grow, change, and flourish from conception to late adulthood? This course takes you on a rich journey through the stages of the human lifespan, exploring the biological, cognitive, emotional, and social forces that shape development. Using the free OpenStax textbook, Lifespan Development, you’ll gain a solid foundation in developmental psychology while applying concepts through creative, project-based assignments.
Students may choose between two learning paths:
- The Classic Path: A traditional syllabus that moves Module by Module through the stages of life, pairing readings with projects like case studies, observations, media critiques, and community resource design.
- The Quest Path (Optional): A gamified adventure where each Module becomes a “quest” in a larger journey through the lifespan. Students unlock levels, earn badges, and complete “boss challenges” as they progress from infancy through late adulthood, culminating in the title of Guardian of the Lifespan.
Whether you prefer a steady, structured route or an immersive, game-inspired quest, both paths cover the same material and projects, giving you the flexibility to learn in the way that excites you most.

Semester Completion Policy
All self-paced courses must be completed within the semester in which the student is enrolled. While students may work through the material at their own pace, access does not extend beyond the active semester. This policy helps students stay on track, maintain academic momentum, and ensures coursework aligns properly with transcript and credit requirements. We encourage families to plan ahead and schedule consistent time each week for successful completion.
