Description
Stand a student in front of the Pieta and something happens that no worksheet can produce. This course is built on that moment, repeated for fifteen weeks.
This self-paced art history course for high school walks the story of art from ancient civilizations to modern movements through the lens of a Christian worldview, using Marvelous to Behold by Jennifer Courtney and Courtney Sanford as the primary text.
Students study the Mona Lisa, the Pieta, The Arnolfini Portrait, The Return of the Prodigal Son and Impression, Sunrise, along with medieval manuscripts, Renaissance realism, sacred art, symbolism, perspective and Baroque storytelling.
The work is project-based rather than memorization-based. Major assignments include creating an illuminated manuscript page, building a multimedia art history timeline with artist investigations, and finishing with a presentation and a reflective portfolio.
Reflection journals and visual journals run alongside, training students to look closely, read symbolism and say how worldview shapes what an artist makes.
