This July, America turns 250.

It’s a milestone most of us will only see once. And while there will be plenty of fireworks and parades, we wanted to give homeschooling families something quieter to mark the moment — something that puts beautiful words back at the center of the table.

So our teacher, Mrs. Angela Ferrell made you a free download: America 250 Poetry Bingo.

Why poetry, and why now

A nation’s story is carried in its language. The verses of Longfellow and Whitman, the cadence of Lincoln’s speeches, the hymns and psalms that steadied generations through hardship — these are not relics. They are part of the inheritance we get to hand to our children.

Poetry trains the ear and the heart. It teaches a young reader to slow down, to notice, to feel the weight of a single well-chosen word. In a summer of screens and noise, a few lines of verse can be a small act of recovery — a way of pointing your student toward what is true, good, and beautiful.

That’s the True North we keep coming back to. Not just facts to memorize, but a direction to face.

How the bingo card works

The card is simple and flexible — built for real summers, not rigid lesson plans.

Each square is a small invitation: read a poem aloud on the porch, memorize four lines and recite them at dinner, copy a favorite stanza in your best handwriting, find a poem written before 1776, write your own verse about your hometown, illustrate a poem you love. Work a row, work a column, or fill the whole card by Labor Day. There’s no grade, no timer, and no wrong way to play.

It’s the kind of thing you can hand to a reluctant middle schooler and a poetry-loving high schooler alike. Older students can stretch into analysis and original writing; younger ones can simply listen and copy. The point isn’t to perform. The point is to let beautiful language do its quiet work over a long, warm summer.

A small taste of the classroom

This is the same spirit our students find all year long. At True North Academy, literature isn’t a worksheet — it’s a live, dynamic conversation with a real teacher and a small group of classmates who are wrestling with the same great text. Our world-class teachers don’t just assign poems; they help students hear them.

If your family loves what this summer’s poetry stirs up, that conversation is waiting in our live online classes this fall.
