Ready for Adventure?
But here’s the twist: “Enchantment” wasn’t just about sand particles or meteorological mischief; it was a metaphor for something greater. It embodied the essence of courage, resolve, and unwavering strength. Yes, my friends, we’re talking about grit – that powerful blend of passion and perseverance that seems to be in short supply these days.
In a world where people easily crumble like delicate snowflakes and take offense at the drop of a hat, it’s high time we pondered this vital question: Are our children truly growing in grit? Are they emerging as fearless warriors, fortified with unyielding character and an indomitable spirit? Because let me tell you, this remarkable gift of grit will serve as their secret weapon in navigating an increasingly secular world.
So join me on this gritty adventure as we explore the importance of grit and why it’s high time we raise a generation of resilient, tenacious individuals who can conquer any challenge that comes their way. Trust me, it’ll be one heck of a ride.
Get Intentional!
In her excellent book, aptly titled, Grit, Angela Duckworth, takes on the task of developing the idea of grit in our children. She advocates for making Grit development a part of kid’s life skills curriculum.
I couldn’t agree more. Our kids need grit. It’s what allows them to go out and compete, take risks, fail and try again.
Key Ingredients for Developing Grit
- Practice– Practice is what lets us learn as we go. To practice and develop well we must get assessment and feedback.
- Purpose– Grit is not always about pursuing those things that we might have a natural inclination toward. Students should consider pursuing something that we can develop an interest in over the long term.
- Hope- This is tied to trying and failing. Failure is a huge part of developing grit. We need to teach our kids that success does not come without failure. Winners keep pursuing goals despite setbacks.
- Time– We need to set aside time to practice with deliberation, fail and succeed.
Create Some Grit Goals
Angela Duckworth has some practical recommendations for bestowing the remarkable gift of grit to your children:
- Choose something that requires deliberate daily practice.
- Commit to doing this activity for 2 years.
- Finish what you’ve started for specified interval.
Latin was our Grit Goal
In our homeschool, we utilized grit goals. For two years we studied Latin together. As a result, my two younger kids developed a true love for language learning. It’s now been several years since. My son taught Latin through college earning excellent money and graduating debt free. My daughter has gained fluency in a Critical Language and has studied 4 other languages since. The point is, that one grit goal developed their understanding of what they could do. They developed the tools and skills needed to do difficult things. That little bit of grit made them grittier.
Latin I
Latin teaches students how to manage many moving parts, including vocabulary, grammar, declensions, conjugations, tenses and culture. The’ll learn English grammar in a new and intentional way as well as develop critical thinking skills. Learning Latin is a great grit goal!
Grit Goals Make your Grittier
Our grit goal for this coming year will change, as our family changes, and kids grow. Our oldest son is at Boot Camp, as I write this. A program that bestows on thousands of young people the remarkable gift of grit each year. Our second son is participating in a demanding memory work competition, Our youngest has added another language to her list.
Grit goals can be academic, physical, social, mental, spiritual. Where is your student the most vulnerable? It might be time to think about some grit goals so that they can develop the courage needed to face whatever’s ahead.

This is so needed today. This is an excellent thought-provoking article.
I loved this book/ concepts so much, I’be bought and given it as gifts. Great parenting/ teaching tools!
I love these reasons. Especially Purpose. How many people will do something when they feel there is no purpose?
I know, right? If we have purpose, we can move mountains!
