Study Skills & Strategies is a 6 week, 1.5 hour weekly summer intensive course designed to prepare students to meet the demands of their regular coursework and provide a foundation for students to “learn to learn”. Students will go through a process of self-assessment & goal setting, then learn to develop their skills to meet their individual needs. Topics include time management, active listening, reading textbooks, taking notes, reviewing notes and material previously covered, preparing for tests, concentration, and managing homework. Students will improve their knowledge of digital resources commonly used during True North classes, such as MySchoolApp and Google resources. Class structure will be broken up into the blocks of time by topic, with a 5 minute mid-class break.
Supplies: 5 pack of colored highlighters (yellow, pink, green, blue, orange), several packs of index cards, binder/book rings (assorted sizes), pencil or erasable pens (Frixion brand recommended), colored pencils (Crayola quality or better, Prismacolor recommended), composition notebook, 3 ring binder w/ 3 dividers, inexpensive, simple student planner (you can find these at dollar stores or free printables online).
Prerequisites: Students should be entering junior high or high school and should be ready to keep up with the pacing of class.
Credits: Successful completion of this course will entitle students to ¼ elective credit. This class will pair well with and is a strong segway into Life Skills courses, Economics, Entrepreneurship, high school science, history & math courses. Continuation of study into Study Skills fall classes is an exciting opportunity to expand learning.
