Mathematics in Everyday Life: Exploring the Art, History, and Impact of Math
Time: Spring 2025, Tuesday, 2pm CST.
Instructor: Leanne Benjamin
High School Level (advanced 8th graders permitted)
Course Description
This one-semester course is designed for students who have a passion for subjects outside the scientific realm, particularly “the arts.” Not everyone excels at mathematics, but this course offers a fresh perspective on the subject. We’ll explore the development of mathematics, from its early beginnings to its modern applications, revealing an intriguing history filled with fascinating characters and surprising contributors.
Throughout the course, we’ll observe patterns in nature, understand sequences, and learn how these patterns played a critical role in historical events like World War II. We’ll delve into the wonders of the cosmos with the Copernican Revolution and the incredible journey to the moon and back.
We’ll also explore the mysterious branch of mathematics known as “math for liars” and investigate its peculiarities. Additionally, we’ll uncover the connections between math and various fields, including music, art, architecture, medicine, and weaponry. Along the way, we’ll discuss why mathematics is often called “the handmaiden of the sciences” and reflect on the famous phrase “standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Each student will have the opportunity to contribute to the class by submitting a project in their area of interest, allowing them to explore the intersection of math and their passions. So, get ready for an exciting journey! Whether we’re venturing into the future or exploring new concepts, you’ll discover many fascinating aspects of mathematics without the need for algebra. Come join us!
