Art Level I is a beginner’s course for students with artistic interests with a special emphasis on Animals. This class focuses on students with less experience with drawing, art techniques, and painting. Students will learn these concepts and skills. This is a high school level course recommended for middle school and high school-aged students. Middle school or Junior High Students who want to be challenged may also join this high school level class.

This course fosters art as both a physical skill set and communicative soft skill. Art is expressive in ways that words sometimes fail to be. Learning how to understand another person through the art they produce and to express moods, emotions, and experiences through art is a lifelong therapeutic, social, and self-care skill that will benefit a student throughout their lifetime.

Art Club will teach sketching and shading basics with pencil drawings as well as the foundations for color theory with watercolor paints. Subject matter will focus on drawing, shading, and coloring animals in various cartooning and realism based styles. Nuggets of art history are included throughout the year. This class is a half credit 1 semester class consisting of the first 15 weeks during of the school year.

Required materials: Watercolor paints, brushes, watercolor paper, sketchbook, pencils, erasers.

Skills Covered

  • Drawing skills – Animals
  • Illustration
  • Still Life
  • Watercolor Painting

Class Structure

This class meets weekly Fall Semester Fridays from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Central Time.

Students will have independent assignments between meetings.

Note to Parents: Art skills and styles vary widely between individuals even at a learning age. The goal, and therefore grading, of both Art Club levels, is not based on the idea that there is one singular bar that all students must reach, but rather on individual growth in skill sets and understanding in each student. The serene nature of Monet’s “Water Lilies” is not judged by the vivid motion of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, nor Frida Kahlo’s rich Hispanic portrait work judged against Pablo Picasso’s abstract eye.

Required Skills & Materials

  • Required computer skills: Use Zoom to attend meetings
  • Take & upload photos of assignments
  • Art supplies

This list of supplies will be provided on request for interested parties. The instructor will send out a supply list to students who are registered one month ahead of the start of the school year for students taking Art Class Level One or Two.
