Full-year, Full Credit Class
Meets: 2023-2024| Tuesday 11:30 -12:30 p.m. CST
Instructor: Dr. Kristin Moon
Required Texts: The Anatomy Coloring Book
Pre-Requisites: Biology
Anatomy and Physiology will explore the structural organization and interplay between parts of the body. In this year-long high school level course, students will learn about the structure and function of cells, tissues, and organs of the human body and how the organ systems work together.
Anatomy and Physiology material will be taught using a variety of methods including live, interactive classes, videos, hands-on activities, patient case studies, online simulations, and labs.
Whenever possible, students will understand how the topics we study apply to real life. Students will come to appreciate the marvel of the human body.
Topics we will study include:
- Anatomical Positions and Terminology
- A Review of Cells and Cellular Biology
- The 4 Types of Tissues in the Human Body
- The Integumentary System
- The Skeletal System
- The Muscular System
- The Nervous System (Including the Senses)
- The Endocrine System
- The Circulatory System
- The Lymphatic System (Including Immunity)
- The Digestive System
- The Respiratory System
- The Urinary System
- The Reproductive System
Anatomy and Physiology Supply List
Required text:
The Anatomy Coloring Book by Wynn Kapit and Lawrence Nelson
In addition to the coloring book, I will provide reading passages from free online textbooks as well as videos and websites for more information.
Required lab materials and supplies:
- Round balloon
- Yarn
- Clothespin
- Calculator
- Cardstock (white, cream, or other light color)
- Tape
- Scissors
- Colored pencils
Ruler - Iodine
- Cornstarch
- Plastic sandwich bags
- Vinegar
- Bleach
In addition to these items, there will be a few other items needed over the course of the year from the grocery store (such as crackers, a raw chicken wing). I will let students know at least a week in advance before any of these items are needed so that they have time to buy them.
Optional but suggested*:
*As expected, with an anatomy and physiology class, we will be doing dissections over the course of the year during our regular class time. I will dissect the specimen and live stream the video to the students. Students who wish to dissect alongside me can do so from home. While I will never require a student to do a dissection, dissections are hugely beneficial in understanding the material.
- Dissecting tools
- Dissecting pan
- Preserved cow eye
- Preserved sheep heart
- Preserved sheep brain
- Preserved fetal pig
- Human blood type kit
We will be conducting dissections in this class. While students are not required to perform dissections, they are encouraged to dissect along with the instructor during class. If students wish to perform dissections, they will need to buy preserved dissection specimens.
Required Texts: The Anatomy Coloring Book
Full Year Course – 1 Credit: The class will be taught and graded by your True North Homeschool Academy teacher. The coursework your child will complete in this high school level course is equal to one credit hour, which your homeschool may award upon completion of the course. M O’Dwyer (verified owner) –
Dr. Moon’s Anatomy & Physiology course was a wonderful experience for my high schooler. Because my daughter was taking A&P as a sophomore, we were concerned that she would find the course too difficult. However, she found the workload to be the perfect – both challenging and fascinating. She learned so much, and never felt overworked.
Dr. Moon uses a variety of teaching methods that will appeal to students of many learning styles. The homework was not burdensome and was filled with hands-on activities that developed learning through discovery and application. Dr. Moon was excellent about communicating assignments clearly and her grading was very prompt. This class will appeal to students who are just interested in biological sciences, but it will also greatly benefit students who will go on to pursue degrees in the medical field.
