The History and Meaning of the 4th of July

The History and Meaning of the 4th of July

The 4th of July, commonly known as Independence Day, is a significant and cherished holiday in the United States. It is a day of patriotism, celebration, and remembrance of the nation’s birth. It’s a fun and exciting day to celebrate freedom and family!

The Road to Independence

The journey towards American independence began with the colonists’ discontent under British rule. In the late 18th century, tensions escalated, leading to events like the Boston Tea Party and the Continental Congress. These events set the stage for the eventual declaration of independence.

World History – Strategy: War & Peace

World History- Strategy: War & Peace will focus on the American founding. This course begins by considering George Washington’s advice on foreign policy in his Farewell Address. Why have we largely ignored that advice for more than a century? That question will take us back to the first principles of the strategy.

What is war, and why do nations fight?

The Declaration of Independence

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, a document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. The declaration proclaimed the thirteen American colonies as independent states, free from British rule. It laid the foundation for the birth of a new nation, founded on principles of liberty, equality, and unalienable rights.

Celebrations of Early Years

In the early years following the declaration, the 4th of July was celebrated with various festivities, including parades, speeches, and fireworks. The celebrations aimed to honor the newly gained freedom and express gratitude for the sacrifices made during the Revolutionary War. One of the hallmarks of a town’s Independence Day Celebration included reading the Declaration of Independence outload to the community as well as the names of the original signers. This is still such a great way to commemorate the 4th of July ! The little House on the Prairie Books have a sweet rendition of this communal reading of the Declaration of Independence in Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Symbolism of the American Flag

The American flag, with its thirteen stripes representing the original colonies and fifty stars representing the states, is an enduring symbol of the nation’s independence. The flag’s design has evolved over time, reflecting the growth and expansion of the United States. It serves as a potent reminder of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped the country.

The Spirit of Freedom and Democracy

The 4th of July embodies the spirit of freedom and democracy. It celebrates the fundamental values that America holds dear: liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. The holiday serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the founding fathers and countless others who fought for these principles.

It is a time to bond with loved ones, reflect on the nation’s history, and appreciate the privileges of living in a free society.

Fireworks: A Dazzling Display

One of the most anticipated aspects of the 4th of July celebrations is the fireworks display. The spectacular bursts of colors and lights in the night sky symbolize the joy and exuberance associated with the holiday. Fireworks have become synonymous with the 4th of July, captivating audiences across the nation.

National Pride and Reflection

Independence Day provides an opportunity for Americans to reflect on their nation’s progress, challenges, and shared values. It is a time to appreciate the diversity and resilience of the American people. From naturalization ceremonies welcoming new citizens to parades honoring veterans, the day fosters a sense of national fellowship and appreciation for this country that embodies the idea of freedom!

The 4th of July holds immense significance in the American cultural landscape. It commemorates the country’s independence, honors the sacrifices of its founding fathers, and celebrates the core values of freedom, equality, and democracy. As we gather with family and friends, enjoying fireworks and festivities! Happy 4th of July!

Celebrate 4th of July!

Celebrate 4th of July!

Certain Holidays get celebrated big time at our house, and the 4th of July is one of them! We love this country and the principles it was founded on. But we don’t consider ourselves proud Americans- more like grateful Americans. We had the opportunity to choose our education, vocation, spouse, faith, location, and lifestyle. Is it any wonder that people are clamoring to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave?

So, yep, we celebrate by decorating the house with red, white, and blue buntings that look about perfect on our 100-year-old house, along with Old Glory flying, friends to celebrate with and fun to be had by all!

Family recipes, activities and traditions are an important part of every holiday – here are some of ours!

Good Food

  • Grilled Chicken or Flank Steak, marinated in soy sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and a ton of cilantro.Celebrate 4th of July
  • Deviled Eggs: My deviled eggs are de rigor for holidays and perfect as is. Peeled boiled eggs, sliced in half. Smash yolks with real mayonnaise and mustard to taste.  Set egg white halves on your beautiful carnival ware deviled egg plate, and spoon the generous yolk mixture into each half. Sprinkle with paprika and enjoy. Perfection!
  • Veggie Tray: all the veggies. Sour cream with Spike and lots of Dill if you want a dip.
  • All the Fruit is in a scooped-out watermelon half. Get fancy and scallop the edges if you want.
  • A beautiful charcuterie tray
  • And Cheesecake, with berries and a swirl of chocolate, or topped with berries, like ours!
  • Easy Punch: Grape juice with 7up and Lemonade and lots of ice, because we can our own grape juice every year and it’s just part of the summer holidays. Serve in pint-sized mason jars, of course.
Celebrate 4th of July!

Celebrate with Good Fun!

We often spend the afternoons doing target practice and then eat. When everyone is full and just schmoozing, everyone gathers together and my husband reads the Declaration of Independence out loud.

We take time to read the signers’ names. It’s sobering. These men, and their families, were willing to give up so much for an ideal. An ideal that we have all reaped the benefit of. I am grateful to each one of them for their vision and willingness to sacrifice for the long view.

Declaration of Independence

Reading the Declaration of Independence used to be the main focus of Independence Day celebrations in small towns across America. A national remembrance and vision casting for who we were and are as a country. It’s worth re-visiting annually. As one of my favorite pastors, Skip Heitzig says, “Truth needs a memory”.

Laura Ingalls Wilder writes about the importance of reading the Declaration of Independence as they celebrated the 4th of July, (she and her sisters have it memorized, of course) and the natural law on which this country is founded!

How To Inoculate Your Student Against Education Freefall: Student Success Is Possible!

How To Inoculate Your Student Against Education Freefall: Student Success Is Possible!

Education is in Freefall!

Student success might seem more elusive than ever before. Education is facing a crisis, and everyone seems to be aware of it. Public schools admit the problems and issues are reported regularly in the mainstream news. Parents and even students recognize that there are problems, including  violence, loneliness, failing test scores, rising expenses. These are just a few of the challenges that families are grappling with as they wrestle with how to educated their children!

So, What’s a Parent to Do?

Sure, homeschooling is often touted as a great alternative, but let’s be honest here—there can be challenges with homeschooling as well. There’s many reason why homeschooling can be challenging, both parents are working full time, kids might have learning challenges or crazy dream beyond the parents skills set. And what if your kids simply lack motivation and refuse to listen or do schoolwork?

As if these hurdles weren’t enough, let’s not forget that we are currently in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution. Millions of jobs will be created and lost in the next 5 years,  leaving people overwhelmed and uncertain about the future.

Education of the Future

We are living in a really unique time! Families can literally pick and choose from a wide variety of educational options. It’s quite possible to participate in public school sports, belong to a homeschool coop, take online classes as well as Dual Enrollment at a local college. The sky is the limit!

For many families, choosing online classes, both synchronous and asynchronous, allows them ultimate freedom. It makes it possible to provide academic oversite, ensure a healthy and safe physical environment for their kids as well as provide academic excellence for a mere fraction of what a private school would cost.

3 Fundamental Aspects of Future Success!

As you consider where your kids will be educated, consider three fundamental aspects of success: developing study skills, fostering flexibility, and nurturing a strong foundation of faith.

First and foremost, it’s essential to equip your children with effective study skills. Our kids will need to pivot quickly throughout life. Study skills allows them to upgrade their skills and pivot as necessary. This ability to adapt is crucial as we navigate the uncertainties of the future.

Second, focus on cultivating flexibility. In addition to study skills, your children will need a range of soft skills; most importantly flexiblity. Flexibility will allow your student to navigate new challenges, seize opportunities, and adapt to the demands of a changing job market.

Third, don’t overlook the importance of a strong foundation in faith. In a world bombarded with diverse ideologies, our kids will face countless influences. Equipping our kids with the tools they need to stay grounded provides them with a precious gift that will serve them well throughout their lives.

While the core principles of education remain steadfast, it’s also crucial to adapt the curriculum to an unknown future!

Classes that are Highly Beneficial for Every Student

  1. Career Exploration: A solid career exploration class can be a game-changer. It will save both your children and you valuable time, money, and frustration. Students will gain insight into their own skills, abilities and interests. Students will begin to think about what kind of life they want to lead. Students will consdier the cost of college as well as alternatives. A solid Career Exploration class can literally change your student’s life!
  1. Entrepreneurship: These skills will be invaluable as most of us will be working in a global, gig economy in the future. Encouraging your children to embrace entrepreneurial thinking will empower them to create their own opportunities. This will be more important than ever before in a disrupted, competitive market.
  1. Foreign Language: In an increasingly globalized world, being bilingual or multilingual will undoubtedly give your children a competitive edge. It will open doors to diverse cultures and opportunities. Furthermore, it will boost their confidence and enabling them to connect with people from all walks of life.
  1. World Geography: Often dismissed as just another “nice-to-have” class, world geography is so much more. It provides a holistic understanding of politics, history, and the economy. By grasping the interconnectedness of nations and regions, your children will develop a broader perspective on the world, fostering empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a deeper appreciation for diversity.

Student Success is Possible!

By reimagining education and incorporating these classes into high school curricula, we can equip our children with the tools they need to thrive in an uncertain future. Let’s prepare them to become lifelong learners, adaptable problem solvers, and compassionate global citizens. Together, we can transform education and pave the way for a brighter future.
